Replacement, not repair

Report the fault to the contact who arranged your rental and a replacement follows under terms being confirmed. The aim is that the person keeps working. A rental company's job is to keep a seat filled, not to run a repair shop on your time.

This is the practical difference between renting and owning. An owned laptop under warranty goes away for repair and the person waits. A rented one is swapped.

What to tell us, and why it speeds things up

  • Which unit: The machine identifier from the delivery handover, so we know exactly which model to match.
  • What it does: "Will not power on" and "throttles under load" are different faults with different answers.
  • Whether it is blocking someone: A machine down mid-sprint is triaged differently from a spare in a cupboard.
  • Where it is: The zone and building, so the swap can be scheduled with access in mind.

Planning a delivery that survives a failure

Hardware fails at some rate regardless of supplier. What you control is whether one failure becomes an outage.

  • Ask about spares on batch orders. On twenty units, the useful question is not whether a machine will fail but what happens when one does, and what happens if two fail the same week.
  • Keep the batch matched. If every machine is the same model, a replacement drops into the same image with no exception handling.
  • Do not store data only on the device. Sound advice for owned machines; essential for rented ones, because a swap should cost an hour, not a day's work.
  • Order a spare for events. For a one-day event there is no second attempt, and a spare is inexpensive relative to the failure.
